David is scheduled to teach the following two workshops : Dreaming in Script I and Dreaming in Script II.
Dreaming in Script I : Beginner Minuscule Class
This is a ONE day workshop from 10:00 - 5:00 PM (including 1 hour for lunch) .
Option 1 : Saturday March 3rd
Option 2 : Monday March 5th
This class outlines a simple geometric formula for letter construction in the Engrosser's Script alphabet. Each letter is comprised of what are called 'foundational shapes'. These shapes appear in many areas of script writing, but in Engrosser's Script they are isolated from connection to one another. This means that the shapes can be trained as modular units and skill can be built up over time, as each unit improves in accuracy and aesthetic.Students in this class will find themselves subject to potentially new methods of letter construction and must be willing to attempt to create their letters as the Old Masters did. Subsequent classes in the Dreaming In Script Program rely on students to adopt these methods into their everyday writing. It is my intention to create a baseline from which all Engrosser's Script study can ascend.
- Experience Level: Absolute Beginner
- Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
- Duration: 10:00 - 5:00 PM
- Price : $1800 hkd for 1 day
- Dates : Saturday March 3rd OR Monday March 5th
Dreaming in Script II : Intermediate Minuscule & Majuscule Class
This is a THREE day workshop from 10:00 - 5:00 PM (including 1 hour for lunch) .
Option 1 : March 6th, 7th AND 8th
Option 2 : March 4th, 10th AND 11th
This class introduces the students to what are called component studies. If the foundational shapes are the atoms of script, these studies are similar to molecules. The class begins with a discussion around a concept called 'the interval', which is a mechanical spacing unit around which every letter and letter combination is constructed. Utilizing this mechanical model, the experience for writing Engrosser's Script can feel more standardized, and word assembly becomes something that is objectively correct or incorrect.
In addition to intermediate concepts surrounding the minuscule letters, this class introduces attendees to the majuscule letterforms in easy-to-grasp comparison studies. The majuscule portion of this class is based on the overlay and comparison of one majuscule form with the next. Students will discover multiple areas of focus to improve the overall effect and consistency of their majuscules letters while gaining solid concepts for what each should look like as a solitary form.
By the end of this class, students have constructed several properly spaced and constructed words, with a number of useful rules and ideas for tricky letter combinations and a pocket full of historical minuscule and majuscule letter variations they can use at will.
